Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.3
Students are learning division. Some groups are working on learning how to solve story problems with basic division. Other groups are doing a project in which they are using long division with remainders to plan and organize their own movie theater.
Reading- This month we are focusing on these standards
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)
Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.
Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
Most reading groups are reading Fantastic Mr.Fox in their reading groups. They are working on vocabulary, dictionary skills and a variety of comprehension strategies with a focus on the above standards.
Social Studies- This week, we are starting the Immigration Unit. Students will learn and experience through a game why immigrants chose to immigrate, what the process was like in the past and what life is like when they arrived in the United States.
Science-We are continuing with the Simple Machines Unit. Students will be building these next week. We are also working on a lapbook which will display all the concepts they are learning in this unit.
